C.A.R.E.4Paws’ mission is to reduce pet overpopulation and keep animals out of shelters. We support low-income cat and dog owners in Santa Barbara County by providing free spays/neuters, low-cost vaccines and various intervention programs that keep animals in their homes. Our educational outreach strives to inspire a greater sense of compassion and responsibility for pets in this community and beyond. A 501(c)3 nonprofit, C.A.R.E.4Paws serves as an umbrella organization for local shelters and rescues. We support and collaborate closely with these groups, as well as the Humane Society and Santa Barbara County Animal Services, to boost pet retention, increase adoptions, lower the number of unwanted pets born and, ultimately, decrease the amount of adoptable animals found in shelters and euthanized each year.

Shadows Fund

Shadow’s Fund is dedicated to the rescue and re-homing of senior dogs and dogs labelled “pit bulls”. To bring hope to those who have none, to see the downhearted and defeated experience joy again, and to remind the forgotten dogs that they are loved and their life is precious . . . that is our mission.

Shadow’s Fund: Who We Are and What We Do

Shadow’s Fund was Co-Founded in 2009 by Cody Rackley and Jill Anderson as a tribute to their beloved senior dog Shadow, a 15 yr old dog that was found tied to a tree with a note that read “he’s too old”. Touched by the plight of this grey bearded dog, Jill and Cody welcomed Shadow into their home. After Shadow’s passing, the fund was formed to help senior dogs in shelters find loving homes in which to spend the last chapter of their lives. In time, the mission broadened to address other “at risk” shelter dogs, including dogs who are labelled “pit bulls” or are passed over for adoption because of a treatable illness or injury.

Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP)

The mission of the Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP) is to eliminate the killing of adoptable cats impounded at the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter by providing daily care, medical rehabilitation and adoptive homes.

In addition to the primary goal stated above, ASAP also seeks to:

• improve the public perception of the Animal Shelter and increase adoption activity,
• reduce the population of stray and homeless cats through spay/neuter, redemption, foster care, and other educational programs, promote the benefits of companion animals,
• counsel and educate the public in providing a healthy and safe environment for cats, and form working relationships with other Santa Barbara County animal welfare groups.

K-9 Placement and Assistance League Inc

The mission of K-9 Placement and Assistance League, Inc. (K-9 PALS) is to provide veterinary care, training, adoption promotion, permanent homes through rescue and adoption, and advocacy for the homeless and abandoned dogs in County shelters, and other homeless dogs in need whenever possible, all in an effort to strive to eliminate euthanasia so that every abandoned dog will have a chance for a loving home.

Diana Basehart Foundation

Our Mission

Diana Basehart Foundation provides financial help for essential veterinary care to low-income families, seniors, veterans, and the disabled in Santa Barbara County. We keep people and their pets together, while also minimizing the number of animals being turned over to shelters. One hundred percent of all donations go directly to care for a companion animal in need.

Santa Barbara Humane Society

Our full name is the Santa Barbara Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. We are a privately supported non-profit agency dedicated to the welfare of all companion animals that share the world with us. We are the third oldest Humane Society in the State of California, founded in 1887, and have been in continuous service since that time. We serve the geographical area from the Carpinteria area to Santa Ynez Valley.

Bunnies Urgently Needing Shelter

BUNS is located at the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter, 5473 Overpass Rd, Santa Barbara California. BUNS is an volunteer, independent non-profit corporation dedicated to the care and welfare of abandoned rabbits and guinea pigs. BUNS works to find bunnies and guinea pigs permanent homes, and educates the public on caring for their guinea pig and rabbit companion.

Dog Adoption & Welfare Group (DAWG)

The Dog Adoption & Welfare Group (DAWG) mission is simple: A no-kill shelter... an idea whose time has come. DAWG provides a safe and loving environment for dogs awaiting permanent adoption, and promotes their adoption through outreach programs in the Santa Barbara community. Our primary goal is to reduce the rate of euthanasia in Santa Barbara County shelters by providing the medical care and training many dogs need for a second chance at life. DAWG strives to represent the population of all homeless dogs regardless of breed, age, gender, or disability. Since DAWG’s inception in 1991, we have worked hard to bring out the best in our dogs, improving their quality of life during their stay at the shelter, and placing healthy, well-behaved dogs back into the community.

Old Yeller Ranch Rescue

Old Yeller Ranch Rescue is dedicated to rescuing urgent dogs from shelters throughout California. We are not shelter or breed exclusive. We have a small facility in Los Olivos, CA where we foster up to 15 dogs at a time as an intermediate home until a forever home is found. In fostering these dogs, it is our goal to work with them through the traumatic stress that usually accompanies a dog leaving a chaotic shelter. We pride ourselves on being open and honest in trying to place our dogs with a compatible forever home. We test for dog aggression, child compatibility, leash and standard obedience and if necessary, cat compatibility. We provide as much veterinary care as the dog needs to be able to enter his/her new forever home with a substantial amount of information on his/her current state of health. We give these dogs love and affection and will work tirelessly to find them their perfect forever home that they deserve.

Forever Friends Golden Retriever Rescue

Founded in 2009, Forever Friends Golden Retriever Rescue is an all-volunteer nonprofit corporation based in Ventura County, California, dedicated to alleviating the suffering of Golden Retrievers in need. As an all-volunteer organization, we fulfill our mission by evaluating the health and behavior of the Golden Retrievers we take in, providing medical care as needed, screening potential adopters, and placing our rescued Goldens in appropriate homes. Our mission is to help alleviate the suffering of Golden Retrievers in need: those who have been abandoned, abused, neglected, have lost their homes or families, or are in need of medical help.

Canine Adoption and Rescue League (CARL)

Canine Adoption and Rescue League is a 501(c)(3) Private Non-Profit No-Kill Organization. We rely on donations and do not receive government, state, or city funding. We operate almost entirely by volunteers. Since 1996, Canine Adoption and Rescue League has rescued and placed thousands of unwanted, sick, abandoned, and homeless dogs. Dogs in our adoption program are placed in pre-screened, loving and secure homes. We make a lifetime commitment to all of our dogs. Canine Adoption and Rescue League receives hundreds of calls from people who must find a home for a stray, a litter of puppies or even a family pet. Canine Adoption and Rescue League’s mission is to advocate for animal welfare, seeking to end the needless deaths of companion animals through our adoption, education, and outreach programs.

Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network

Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and return to the wild sick, injured, orphaned, or oil-impaired wild birds and small mammals native to Santa Barbara county and to educate the public about living in harmony with wildlife.

Our Vision

The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network exists to support the present and future health of wildlife species and communities by:

• Providing quality rescue, treatment, rehabilitation and release services to injured, sick, oiled, orphaned and displaced wildlife.
• Educating the public about the needs of at-risk wildlife, the challenges faced by wildlife in the region, and effective ways to help ensure the health and survival of wild animals.
• Gathering and sharing information on wildlife treatments, rehabilitation and release criteria and techniques, behavior, optimal management methods and care facilities with other wildlife care providers, researchers, and agencies while promoting efficient use of community wildlife support resources by cooperating with other organizations and individuals in order to fulfill our mission.

Animal Emergencies

You are bitten by an animal or have an animal that bit someone else.

Your pet has bitten or been bitten by wildlife

You see an injured animal. If the owner of the animal is present, it is their responsibility to transport the animal to a veterinarian.

You see loose livestock.

You see an animal; dead, alive or injured - creating a traffic hazard or involved in a situation that is dangerous to human safety.

Animal Complaints / Nuisances

 Please call our office at 963-1513 during our daytime business hours to report any animal disturbances, noise complaints, sanitation problems, mistreatment or abuse to animals, neglect or any other animal related problems.

Humane / Live Cat Traps

Call our office during our daytime business hours to reserve a trap for removing cats.

Dog & Cat Licensing

All DOGS must be rabies vaccinated and licensed when they reach four (4) months of age. All unaltered CATS must be licensed when they reach four (4) months of age.

Lost / Found Animals

Call daily to leave a lost or found report at both the City Animal Control dispatch office and the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter. If you have lost or found an animal after hours or on the weekend, call the lost and found pet hotline: 564-6862 Stray animals are held for 72 hours for owner redemption and then are placed up for adoption. If you have lost your pet, it is your responsibility to check for it, in person, at the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter. Your animal may be waiting there for you.

Equine and Canine News

The Equine & Canine News was co-founded and created by Jessica Johnson-Segal, who was fulfilling a dream while serving a need for horse and dog lovers alike. Jessica works closely with her mom and co-founder, Nola Johnson, who loves putting her sales and business experience to work. Jessica's hunch was right- dog and horse lovers alike appreciate a full color, locally-based publication with informative articles and local events.
